According to a report today from Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com, Dave Sims, who has been the television voice of the Seattle Mariners since 2007, is interested in and has interviewed for the open New York Yankees radio play-by-play job at WFAN. The position became open when John Sterling suddenly retired at the age of 85 after the season had already begun.
Sims, 71, lives in New York during the offseason with his wife and there are other family members close by. Sims told the paper, “We’ll see what happens. I love what I’m doing here in Seattle. New York is home. That’s all I can say.”
Several different voices have sat in Sterling’s chair to get through the 2024 season. Justin Shackil and Emmanuel Berbari have carried most of the load along with Yankees Spanish language announcer Rickie Ricardo. There have also been a few special appearances including WFAN host Brandon Tierney and FS1 host Craig Carton getting opportunities.
NJ.com points out that Sims has a longtime friendship with Suzyn Waldman, which could make the transition fairly easy.
The paper reached out to Ricardo, who has a lot of local support to get the position, and he said, “It would be an honor to get it, but I have no idea what they’re going to do. It’s out of my control and I leave it to the powers that be.”
Another source told Miller that Sterling’s salary was around $750,000 but that “there’s no way Audacy will pay the next guy anything close to that.”
In addition to working for the Mariners, Sims has called games for Westwood One, ESPN, FOX Sports and NBC.
