A couple of weeks ago when ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski surprised everyone and abruptly retired from sports media to take on the role of GM of St. Bonaventure men’s basketball, speculation immediately went to Shams Charania as a possible replacement. While other names were mentioned, including the idea that ESPN might make someone like Adam Schefter a ‘Super Insider,’ Charania announced today via his X account that he is indeed headed to ESPN.

“I am honored to join ESPN as the company’s Senior NBA Insider,” Charania wrote. “I can’t wait to be part of an incredible group of colleagues at ESPN and serve the sports audience worldwide.”

Charania had been working for The Athletic and FanDuel TV and had recently left Stadium. Previously, he and Wojnarowski worked together at Yahoo Sports. Charania started his career as a sportswriter covering the Chicago Bulls at the age of 17.

Sergio Gonzalez, Editorial Director for The Athletic posted about Charania on X, saying, “I’ve had the incredibly good fortune of working with the type of talent that editors dream of. Working with Shams Charania, seeing how he goes about his work and everything that goes into him being who he is has been an honor and a privilege.”
