Congratulations go out to longtime Atlanta Hawks radio voice Steve Holman who kicked off his 40th season with the team last night calling his 3,000th consecutive game. The Hawks provided Holman with a win on the memorable night knocking off the Brooklyn Nets 120-116.
Steve Holman has been broadcasting Atlanta Hawks games so long, the person he took over for was John Sterling who has gone on to call New York Yankees games for 36 years. His streak of games called began on March 8, 1989.
Holman’s broadcasting career began in the early 1970s. He started as a broadcasting assistant to Johnny Most with the Boston Celtics. He first called a game in 1976 when Most had become ill. Holman came to Atlanta in 1980. His first job in the city was calling Atlanta Falcons football and Atlanta Chiefs soccer.
Only Chick Hearn has called more consecutive NBA games on the radio than Holman. Hearn’s record with the Lakers stands at 3,338 games.
“I do have my sights on that Chick Hearn record,” Holman told the Hawks media team. “I really look forward to every game. It’s an escape for our listeners. It’s also an escape for me for three hours to go up there and do the game,” he said. “I feel good, and as long as they let me keep doing it – and as long as I can speak – I’ll keep doing it.”
Holman was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 2022.
