The University of Kansas made a fairly abrupt announcement late last week when they said all Kansas men’s basketball radio broadcasts would be moving from 105.9 FM to 92.9 FM “The Bull” in Lawrence starting with an exhibition game that was aired that same evening. Kansas is the No. 1 ranked team in both the preseason AP Top 25 and the Coaches Poll.
The need to move stations came following the recent sale of 105.9 FM by its parent company, Great Plains Media to Reyes Media out of Kansas City. The format will be changing on the station to Spanish-language broadcasting, although that will not happen until the beginning of the new year. KU said this way they don’t have to move the games in the middle of the season.
Kansas football broadcasts will remain on 105.9 FM through the end of their season. The Kansas men’s basketball team will open their regular season on Monday Nov. 4 when they host Howard. Their second game of the season is a matchup of college basketball blue bloods when they host North Carolina on Friday Nov. 8.
According to reports, Great Plains Media sold KKSW to Reyes Media Group for $175,000. Great Plains Media also owns 105.9 KISS-FM as well as KLWN AM/FM.
