KYW Newsradio has announced that former reporter Al Novack had died at the age of 79 due to complications from Alzheimer’s Disease.
Novack worked at WCAU — which later became 1210 WPHT — until joining KYW in 1990. He stayed at the Audacy Philadelphia all-news radio station until his retirement in 2014.
“Reporting and music was in his blood,” Novack’s daughter, Melissa, told the station. “It was something he was born to do … “He loved KYW. He loved all of the staff. Just know how important the Philadelphia region was to him and was part of him from the morning when he got up to get his Wawa coffee,” she added.
In addition to his work as a news reporter, Novack also served as a volunteer firefighter at the North Penn Volunteer Fire Company for more than 40 years. Prior to his radio and firefighting careers, Novack was a Navy veteran.
Former colleague Mike DeNardo remembered his former co-worker fondly.
“He was a very colorful guy,” DeNardo said. “He had a booming voice. He would make police calls very early in the morning in that voice, ‘Top of the morning to you, officer.’”
Al Novack is survived by his three children, ten grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
