After 55 years, the final curtain has dropped on “The Dr. Demento Show.” Barry “Dr. Demento” Hansen announced the news during the most recent episode of “The Dr. Demento Show.”
The show, known for comedy and novelty songs, launched in 1970 on Los Angeles stations KPPC and KMET. Hansen will be forever linked to Weird Al Yankovic, who got his start in parody songs when his music was exposed on the show.
Hansen broke the news, saying, “I’m now 84 years old, and I have been doing this show for nearly 55 years, about two-thirds of my life. It’s been a blast, but I have come to the decision that I need to hang up my top hat soon. The show you just heard is the last of my regular shows.”
Hansen was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2009. His show was syndicated in 1974. In 2010, it entered a paid subscription model.
