Telling The Audience What You Think They Want to Hear Won’t Help You Grow

0

It’s OK to not always tell your audience what you think they want to hear.

I have been writing that phrase down at the top of my notepad before I start my show for the last two weeks. Something tells me I will need it for at least another 12 months.

In the last week alone there have been two major topics that have divided News Talk audiences across the country: The debt-ceiling debate and the brewing Donald Trump vs. Ron DeSantis feud.

And as I’ve listened to talented hosts and perused the social media landscape, I’ve noticed a hesitancy that I usually would not expect.

Granted, for the last two years it’s been relatively easy when talking about the national political scene: Joe Biden is a disaster. Whether it’s economic policy, border policy or foreign policy, most Americans don’t believe the guy is doing a good job. The News Talk audience, generally speaking, thinks he’s doing a terrible job.

That’s shooting fish in a barrel. But now comes the hard(er) work.

Starting with the debt-ceiling drama, there was a big divide amongst Republicans in the House of Representatives. The bill passed with broad bipartisan support, however dozens of Republicans, many of the most conservative members of the House, voted against the bill, saying it did not do enough to cut spending

As a result, it seemed many hosts, who assume their audience blindly aligns with everything the most-conservative members of the House say, were hesitant to point out the obvious: Explain what better deal you were getting when you only had a small majority in the House, and no control over the Senate or the White House?

It was a question I never got a good answer to on my show.

Republicans already picked up a win getting Biden to the negotiating table after he spent months saying he wanted a clean debt-ceiling raise with no spending cuts attached. Speaker Kevin McCarthy won, got some concessions, and slowly began turning the tide towards hopefully Senate and White House victories in 2024, when then the real work can begin on getting spending under control. This was a victory.

And while no one with any levels of fiscal sanity believes our government’s spending isn’t wildly out of control, that is a separate conversation from whether or not this was a good or smart deal.

Then, there’s the Trump vs. DeSantis feud. Some have staked their claim with one candidate over the other. Some are trying to toe the line and avoid all conflict. Neither approach makes sense to me.

The obvious approach seems to me to analyze the candidate’s based on what they do and say on a given day. There will be good and bad days for Trump. DeSantis will have his up and down moments. I can guarantee this because they’re flawed human beings like the rest of us.Like every election season, it will ebb and flow, and eventually someone will come out on top.

Calling out each candidate’s positives and negatives isn’t picking one over the other, it’s opining on the news of the day.

If you compare this to sports talk radio, a national host talking about the NFL Playoffs doesn’t have to have a preferred team, but he or she has to have something to say that’s interesting, compelling, honest, thought-provoking and entertaining.

If they don’t do this, they’ll become wallpaper in a world of too many media options.

If you have the trust of your audience, you’re real, honest, engaging and thoughtful, you won’t lose your audience. You’ll keep them engaged and you’ll grow it.

Elon Musk Acknowledges Twitter Made An Error Restricting Matt Walsh’s Documentary

0

Elon Musk addressed reports on Thursday stating that Twitter had supposedly terminated an agreement with The Daily Wire to broadcast “What Is A Woman?” He acknowledged it as “an error made by numerous individuals at Twitter.”

According to The Daily Wire, following Musk’s acquisition of the social media platform and his commitment to upholding free speech, The Daily Wire pursued an agreement with Twitter to livestream Matt Walsh’s documentary, “What is a Woman?” on the platform’s first anniversary.

“After reviewing the film, though, Twitter let us know that not only could we no longer purchase the package they offered, they would no longer provide us any support and would limit the reach of the film and label it as ‘hateful conduct’ because of ‘misgendering,'” Daily Wire co-CEO Jeremy Boreing said in a tweet thread explaining Twitter’s reversal.

At first, Twitter expressed great enthusiasm for the concept and proposed a package to dedicate an entire page for users to watch the film revealed Boreing. However, the situation took a turn when Twitter requested a screening of the documentary before finalizing the deal.

While being away on a business trip outside the United States, Musk addressed Boreing’s statement by stating, “This was an error committed by numerous individuals at Twitter. “It is definitely allowed,” said Musk. “Whether or not you agree with using someone’s preferred pronouns, not doing so is at most rude and certainly breaks no laws.”

Despite being overlooked by mainstream media reviewers and its impact on the cultural landscape being disregarded, the revolutionary documentary launched last summer garnered viewership from over 70 countries. In a short span of time,” What is a Woman” rose to become the highest-grossing film for at-home viewing, as reported by Rotten Tomatoes, where audiences awarded it an impressive 97% rating.” After reviewing the film, though, Twitter let us know that not only could we no longer purchase the package they offered, they would no longer provide us any support and would actually limit the reach of the film and label it as hateful conduct’’ because of ‘‘misgendering'” Boreing said in a tweet thread.

Undoubtedly, the documentary played a significant role in igniting a movement aimed at safeguarding children against the detrimental impacts of sex change procedures. In the wake of the film’s premiere and the subsequent advocacy efforts led by Walsh, which shed light on the tragic outcomes associated with so-called” gender-affirming” treatments, no less than twelve states have implemented bans on transgender surgeries for minors.

Chris Stigall Expresses Support For ESPN’s Sam Ponder

Following her tweet expressing support for women who oppose the inclusion of biological men in women’s sports, ESPN broadcaster Sam Ponder has gained a notable admirer in radio talk show host Chris Stigall, who expressed his growing admiration for her.

Stigall addressed the issue on the “Chris Stigall Podcast” Thursday.

Despite the mainstream’s portrayal of Ponder’s controversial tweet, Stigall emphasized that her message is relatively innocuous and deserving of praise, as it promotes support for women’s sports.

“It’s not like she (Ponder) is saying much,” Stigall said. “A sports columnist at USA Today is calling Sam Ponder a bigot for supporting fairness in women’s and girls’ sports. I’m truly fascinated by this; women are in an epic battle right now, and you’re either on one of two sides; I don’t think theirs is a nuanced third way to look at this.”

According to Stigall, there are two precise positions: either one supports the notion of biological men participating in women’s sports by identifying as female, or one opposes it.

“Remember, Sam Ponder, being an ESPN employee, Disney-ABC owned; they’re in a bit of a pickle here, aren’t they? What do you do with a popular woman on your network when she doesn’t toe the line of the politics of corporate ownership? It’s easy to get rid of the straight white guy, not as easy to get rid of the lady,” Stigall added.

Stigall praised Ponder for her adept management of the purported controversy, lauding her tweet that declared, “Bigotry is unrelated to biology.” Additionally, Ponder emphasized, “Showing love to others does not necessitate the absence of boundaries.”

Sage Steele, a colleague of Ponder, has also expressed her endorsement for women’s sports and extended her support to Riley Gaines, a prominent college swimming star.

Fox News’ Janice Dean Shares Impactful Message on World MS Day

0

On World MS Day, Janice Dean, the senior meteorologist at Fox News, shared an impactful message regarding her battle against multiple sclerosis. In a compelling video uploaded on Twitter, Dean expressed, “I wanted to inform you that MS doesn’t manifest itself in obvious ways.”

She referred to it as the “invisible illness” or the “My, you look so well” disease because outwardly, individuals may appear fine, having their hair and makeup done. However, their bodies are internally attacked as the central nervous system, including the brain and spine, is affected. Dean received her diagnosis of this neurological condition in 2005.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society states that multiple sclerosis is a condition that impacts the central nervous system, encompassing the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. It involves the deterioration of the protective coating known as the myelin sheath surrounding nerve cells, as explained by Mount Sinai.

Consequently, this damage can impede or halt the transmission of nerve signals. Currently, the cause of MS remains unknown, and a cure has not yet been discovered, according to the hospital. However, there are available treatments that can aid in decelerating the advancement of the disease.

Dean said she experienced a recent resurgence of symptoms. Dean stated, “I’ve actually been feeling a flare-up of symptoms as of late. Yesterday, I experienced a sensation akin to sunburn at the back of my neck. It persisted throughout the night, leading to restless sleep, and I’m still feeling it today.”

She emphasized that despite appearing fine externally, with hair and makeup done and a smile on her face during her appearances on ‘Fox and Friends,’ internally, it can be quite challenging and unpleasant. She acknowledged the difficulty of maintaining a cheerful demeanor when the disease can cause such profound discomfort.

“Together, I think we are stronger, and I think even if we don’t have a cure for this, there is certainly the hope that we can stop the progression all together, which would be wonderful,” Dean said in the clip.

Pat McAfee: ‘I Hope Like Hell’ Shannon Sharpe Joins ESPN

0

News of Shannon Sharpe’s planned departure from FOX Sports was a topic of discussion across sports media on Thursday, and Pat McAfee is excited at the prospect of Sharpe being a free agent.

McAfee said there are plenty of companies out there that are chomping at the bit to bring Shannon in.

“That’s a narrative shifter to replace,” McAfee said on his show. “That’s a potential massive asset to a platform that wants to launch.”

Pat said in his own talks with various networks and companies over the last several months, he’s seen the potential that’s out there and what kind of value a guy like Sharpe could bring.

“There’s a lot of places that are trying to get into the sports media world,” he said. “There’s a lot of places that are trying to launch their thing who have rights to stuff either in the future or are planning on getting rights but a lot of money behind them.”

McAfee, who just announced he signed a deal to bring his daily sports talk show to ESPN, admitted he’s rooting for Shannon to end up at The Worldwide Leader.

“Shannon is gonna be in a really good spot, and I hope like hell he comes to ESPN,” McAfee said. “And when I say come to ESPN, we’re not even at ESPN. But we’re gonna be there, and if Shannon Sharpe is to be there and you start talking about what a day could look like, that’s f–king awesome.”

Carton & Roberts Share Handwritten Letter From Angry Rays Fans

0

Things have calmed down considerably since WFAN host Evan Roberts made comments insinuating that the hot start to the Tampa Bay Rays wasn’t legitimate. But apparently one self-proclaimed Rays fan is still livid with Roberts’s take.

Co-host Craig Carton posted on Twitter on Thursday a photo of a hand-written nastygram, in which the anonymous author called Carton and Roberts a variety of names, including “morons,” “ugly and uglier,” and “sore losing babies.” The letter also said Carton & Roberts should be glad the writer doesn’t live in New York. The person added they’d tell both hosts how he really feels to their faces.

Carton read the letter on the air on Carton and Roberts, obviously censoring the profanity and the use of a homophobic slur.

“And that’s how my day began,” Carton said.

“That’s a letter, man,” Roberts responded. “I’m just impressed that he didn’t make any jokes about someone named Butch. I’m pleased about that. Or Bubba.”

Craig seemed somewhat impressed that there were apparently fans of the Rays that are so die-hard for the team that they took the time to write the note and mail it to the station.

“That is a commitment to Tampa Rays baseball that I, honest to God, didn’t think existed,” he said.

Roberts did mention that in the 23 games since Tampa’s hot start, the team has gone 12-11. They still lead the AL East by four games over Baltimore and six over the Yankees.

“Just saying! That’s it, just saying!” Roberts said, implying that the Rays don’t look like the world beaters they were made out to be in the first month of the season. “Just giving you some numbers.”

Multiple State Regulators Push Back on Effort to Legalize Gambling on WWE

0

Despite speculation over allowing sports bettors to wager on WWE, there doesn’t appear to be much support at the state level to add it to sportsbook offerings.

Earlier this year, WWE officials had discussions with accounting firm Ernst and Young to secure pre-determined match outcomes in order to allow betting on events. But many states where sports betting is legal have restrictions on wagering on scripted events.

In March, Alex Sherman of CNBC reported that WWE had meetings with regulators in Colorado and Michigan.

“The Colorado Division of Gaming is not currently and has not considered allowing sports betting wagers on WWE matches. By statute, wagers on events with fixed or predicted outcomes or purely by chance are strictly prohibited in Colorado; this includes wagers on the Academy Awards,” Shannon Gray of the Colorado Division of Gaming told Sports Betting Dime.

In Ohio, the same rules apply. The Ohio Casino Control Commission has not fielded any requests to add WWE. Officials in Kansas haven’t received requests either by their residents.

Elsewhere, Maryland sees keeping WWE out of betting offerings as a way to keep the integrity of legal sports betting.

“Maryland’s sports wagering law and regulations prohibit forms of wagering that are contrary to public interest or unfair to bettors,” Seth Elkin of the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency added. “We’ve determined that it is unfair to bettors and therefore not in the public’s interest to accept wagers on sports entertainment events that have scripted or predetermined outcomes, like professional wrestling.”

$150 Million Dollar Lawsuit Filed Against Dave Ramsey By Former Listeners

0

A group of former followers of finance guru and radio host Dave Ramsey, along with his company and a marketing firm, have filed a lawsuit against them. The lawsuit alleges that Ramsey endorsed a timeshare exit company that defrauded customers out of millions of dollars.

According to Religion News Service, seventeen former Ramsey listeners have come together to file a class-action lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for Western Washington. According to the lawsuit, Ramsey allegedly received payments of up to $30 million between 2015 and 2021 to endorse the Kirkland, Washington-based firm called Timeshare Exit Team.

This firm, which many Ramsey listeners were customers of, collected a total of $200 million from clients. In return for payment, the company promised to help clients escape their timeshare obligations and offered a money-back guarantee. However, the lawsuit alleges that these promises were not fulfilled, resulting in customer financial losses.

However, despite charging customers over $5,000 each, the company failed to fulfill its promises. In 2021, Reed Hein & Associates LLC, operating as Timeshare Exit Team, settled a lawsuit filed by the attorney general of Washington state, accusing them of deceptive business practices. The settlement amount was $2.61 million, and subsequently, the company ceased operations.

According to the lawsuit, Dave Ramsey, Timeshare Exit Team, and Happy Hour Media Group, a marketing firm linked to Brandon Reed, one of the founders of Timeshare Exit Team, violated the Washington Consumer Protection Act. The plaintiffs allege they were defrauded, citing “negligent misrepresentation,” “unjust enrichment,” and conspiracy. The lawsuit is seeking damages exceeding $150 million.

The plaintiffs claim that they relied on Dave Ramsey’s enthusiastic endorsement of the Timeshare Exit Team and his financial expertise when they decided to engage with the company.

Renowned for his strong disdain towards timeshare companies, Ramsey proudly expressed his trust in the expertise of the Timeshare Exit Team. During a segment of his show in 2018, a video of which can still be found on “The Ramsey Show” YouTube page, Ramsey declared to his listeners that he had spent years searching for a company capable of helping individuals escape timeshares.

“I could never find anything until I stumbled upon this company called Timeshare Exit Team,” he stated in the segment, enthusiastically highlighting the company’s money-back guarantee. “About three years ago, we started endorsing them, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed frustrating the timeshare people.”

Despite the company’s legal issues and the accusations of defrauding customers, as previously reported by Religion News Service, Ramsey remained steadfast in his support, asserting that government officials, reporters, and the timeshare industry had conspired against Timeshare Exit Team.

“Rather than acknowledging the deception, Ramsey recorded a nine-minute radio segment in which he vehemently criticized anyone he deemed responsible for Reed Hein’s difficulties,” states the complaint.

Through his enduring radio show, conferences, and the faith-based personal finance program known as “Financial Peace University,” Ramsey has garnered the trust of millions of devoted followers. However, according to the complaint, his extensive expertise should have alerted him to the fact that Timeshare Exit Team was an untrustworthy entity. This assertion is based on the premise that Ramsey’s knowledge and experience in personal finance should have allowed him to recognize the dubious nature of the Timeshare Exit Team.

Greg Larson, a shipyard worker, and devoted listener of Ramsey, is one of the plaintiffs mentioned in the complaint. Larson had heard Ramsey endorse Timeshare Exit Team “hundreds of times” before reaching out to the company. Other plaintiffs include healthcare professionals, retirees, and individuals who became followers of Ramsey through their churches or his radio show.

The complaint provides a comprehensive account of the association between Ramsey and the Timeshare Exit Team. The latter is categorized as one of the “endorsed local providers” who heavily rely on Ramsey for generating business leads. Ramsey Solutions collects these leads through various channels, such as church-based programs, the company’s website, and newsletters.

Bonneville President Darrell Brown To Retire, Tanya Vea Named Successor

0

Darrell Brown is ready to call it a career. Bonneville International’s President has announced he will retire on August 1. Tanya Vea, the company’s Executive VP of Content and Media Operations, will take over as President and COO.

“I’ve loved my time at Bonneville, and it’s not easy to leave, but it’s the right time for me and my family,” Brown said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity that I’ve had to associate with so many wonderful employees as we’ve worked together to further Bonneville’s mission to be a positive influence on the communities we serve. We’ve grown as a company in our reach and impact, and I know that Tanya [Vea] will take Bonneville to the next level. I’m thrilled for the future of the company under her leadership.”

Brown took over as President of Bonneville in 2013. Prior to that, he worked for McGraw-Hill Broadcasting Company for nearly three decades.

Under Brown’s leadership, Bonneville has added stations in Denver, Sacramento, San Francisco and Salt Lake City to its radio portfolio.

His impact on the industry has been felt outside of the buildings and companies he has led. Brown served on the ABC Affiliate Board and has been involved in a number of NAB efforts. He has served as the board chair for the NAB Leadership Foundation. Prior to that, he was on the group’s board of directors.

His successor, Tanya Vea has been with Bonneville since 2010. She’s been instrumental in the company’s effort to embrace new distribution platforms while also overseeing the company’s operation in Salt Lake City, which includes radio and television stations and digital platforms.

“Darrell [Brown] has been an incredible mentor, and I’m so grateful for all that he’s done for Bonneville. He has led by example as a steward of the company and its resources. I will miss working with him, and I feel incredibly fortunate to take on this role knowing that he has put the company in a position of strength,” she said. “Bonneville is a special company. I’m committed to building on the foundation of those who have come before me and am focused on fulfilling our mission to be trusted voices in our communities. Our greatest strength is our team of talented people, and I am honored to be able to work with them to grow Bonneville for the future.”
