South Carolina radio host Phil Kornblut took to Twitter today to announce that his show SportsTalk and the South Carolina Radio Network have been shutdown after 35 years.
A spokesman for Learfield/IMG said that SportsTalk and the South Carolina Radio Network have been underperforming and were being shutdown as part of the company’s “larger strategy.” Kornblut told Jeff Hartsell of Charleston’s Post & Courier newspaper that he could not comment any further at this time.
Kornblut has been names South Carolina’s broadcaster of the year six times. He was inducted into the state’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018.
The South Carolina Radio Network and SportsTalk launched in 1984. At that time there were 11 affiliates. It eventually grew to over 30 stations with thousands of listeners across the state. At the time of cancellation, SportsTalk had 28 affiliates and Kornblut was joined on the show by Tom Hayes and Will Palaszczuk.
