After nearly five years with the station, Kent Sterling has been dismissed from his weekday afternoon show on WXNT CBS Sports 1430 in Indianapolis.
Entercom Indianapolis, a three-station cluster which included CBS Sports 1430 along with The Mix 107.9 and 99.5 WZPL was sold to Cumulus. The sale will become official on February 28th, with Sterling and other employees being let go ahead of Cumulus assuming control of the cluster.
Sterling was on the air Monday which would turn out to be his last show on WXNT, announcing his dismissal Tuesday morning via Twitter.
Sterling’s WXNT show aired daily from 3 -6pm as the only local weekday program on CBS Sports 1430. Shortly after the announcement, Sterling expanded on his firing, discussing the situation in a 10 minute video.
“You get up, you do what you love and say I’m just going to keep rolling, whether or not I have a microphone in front of me at a radio station that really isn’t going to determine my course of action,” a very upbeat Sterling said.
“What I’m going to do is what I’ve always done and that’s work my ass of talking about sports, learning about sports and participating as a conduit of information and insight for people that love sports.”
For nearly two decades Sterling worked in the management side of radio, with stops that included helping build Indy’s 1070 The Fan and 101 Sports in St. Louis. While Sterling didn’t announce any immediate plans following his dismissal from CBS Sports 1430, his energy and passion certainly fits that of someone who wants to stay behind the microphone and not behind the scenes.
For now, Sterling will focus on his website, KentSterling.com where he posts daily content in the form of audio, video and articles.
