99.9 The Fan Extends Deal With Carolina Hurricanes

Hopefully, the NHL can resume their 2019-20 season and the Carolina Hurricanes will soon be heard again on Capitol Broadcasting’s 99.9 The Fan. Beyond the upcoming playoffs, the Raleigh, NC sports station will remain the Canes flagship radio partner for at least two more seasons, as the two sides announced a new agreement.

According to the extended partnership, 99.9 The Fan will continue to carry a simulcast of FOX Sports Carolina’s telecast of Canes games, as it has since 2018 when longtime radio play-by-play voice Chuck Kaiton departed. After calling radio broadcasts for the Canes and their preceding Hartford Whalers franchise for 39 years, Kaiton reportedly declined an 80% pay cut from the team, leading The Fan to instead simulcast the TV announcers. In addition to offering the FOX Sports telecast on its airwaves, 99.9 The Fan will also continue to produce their own pre- and post-game shows, Stormfront and Aftermath, surrounding each game.

“We are excited to continue our broadcasting and community partnership with the Carolina Hurricanes,” VP of radio at Capital Broadcasting Brian Maloney said in the press release. “We look forward to another two years of great games on all our audio platforms.”
