Larry Michaels Retires As Voice Of Washington Football Team

A nickname isn’t the only thing that will be different in the nation’s capitol this NFL season. The team’s games will have a new sound on radio as Larry Michael has decided to retire after 16 years in the play-by-play booth.

John Keim of ESPN.com tweeted out Michael’s full statement.

It has been an unprecedented offseason in Washington, DC. There will be a new team name. Bruce Allen is out after ten years in the team’s front office. Ron Rivera takes over as head coach. There are whole new medical and front office staffs.

By comparison, Michael’s retirement may seem like smaller news, but as Darin Gantt of Pro Football Talk wrote, it is just another example of how “the churn throughout [Snyder’s] organization has been clear.”

Michael’s official title within the organization was “Chief Content Officer.” In addition to calling games on the radio, he also served as host of Redskins Nation on NBC Sports Washington and The Redskins Coach’s Show on NBC-4 in DC.

Larry Michael called a variety of sports for Westwood One including the Olympics, Notre Dame football, and the NFL. He also served as a boxing reporter for Showtime and Comcast Sports Net and lent his voice to the EA Sports boxing video game Knockout Kings.
