It’s hard to imagine that many, if any Americans were watching something other than election coverage on Tuesday night. Sports radio hosts across the country were no exception. Many took to Twitter, with some expressing political opinions, but most reacting to the chaotic and confusing night of television.
Some, like Kentucky Sports Radio host Matt Jones, reacted to the uncertainty of the race for president, commenting on national story lines.
Others reacted to local races. Joe Giglio of 99.9 the Fan in Raleigh commented on the confusing nature of North Carolina voting for President Trump while overwhelmingly supporting Democratic governor Roy Cooper for re-election.
One aspect of the election that many sports fans took note of was the betting markets. Oddsmakers began the night with Joe Biden as a favorite to take the presidency. During the evening President Trump became a favorite to win re-election and saw his odds grow stronger before suddenly becoming an underdog again once Arizona, a typical GOP stronghold flipped to blue. 670 the Score’s Danny Parkins had been tweeting about the odds throughout the night before ultimately committing to Biden.
Just four-and-a-half hours south on I-55, Brandon Kiley of 101 ESPN was watching the betting line interest in disbelief. He was shocked that so many people were basing their opinions on what oddsmakers were doing.
On social media, CNN’s John King earned praise for his chemistry with anchor Wolf Blitzer and his mastery of a telestrator. That isn’t what FOX Sports Radio’s Colin Cowherd took away from CNN though.
Mike Bell of 92.9 the Fan in Atlanta had some fun with the uncertainty of the night. Even before results started rolling in, he wanted to make it clear that listeners had no reason to be upset with he and partner Carl Dukes.
This is obviously just a small sample of reaction from across the industry. Although, for as many hosts that were commenting on the night, even in a non-political way, there were just as many hosts keeping their mouths shut. It was hard to find reactions to the election or the television coverage from hosts in some major markets along the East Coast.
