HuffPost Closes International Websites

A few weeks ago, The Wall Street Journal reported that BuzzFeed, Inc. would be acquiring news site HuffPost from Verizon Media as part of a stock deal.

When media outlets transition between parent companies, there’s always be changes. The first set of changes that BuzzFeed will do to HuffPost is doing away with their international news sites, which are HuffPost Brasil and HuffPost India, the website announced.

“We confirm that HuffPost has closed its editions in India and Brazil with immediate effect,” a Verizon Media spokesperson said. “We would like to thank the HuffPost India and HuffPost Brazil teams for their hard work and contribution to the organization.”

HuffPost India Editor-in-Chief Aman Sethi reacted to the news on his personal Twitter account.

“Pound for pound, story for story, reporter for reporter, this is the greatest newsroom I have worked for,” Sethi said.

HuffPost Brasil Editor-in-Chief Diego Iraheta went in a different direction. He wrote an article that’s not available to read due to the website’s closure to thank the readers.

“Our team has been completely dedicated to serving what matters to you,” Iraheta wrote. “Here, people always came first!”

Both websites had a combined staff of about 20 people.
