Bernard Goldberg Leaves Real Sports After 20 Years

Bernard Goldberg’s quiet departure from HBO’s Real Sports marks the end of an era as the 75-year-old has left the program after more than 20 years. In February, Goldberg announced the move on his Patreon page.

Goldberg’s conservative politics have caused some friction with the show’s other correspondents and overall editorial direction. Despite stating publicly about his decision to leave the show, there’s no acknowledgment of Goldberg’s departure, and he remains listed as a correspondent.

Awful Announcing outlines moments that resulted in Goldberg departing the show, including his pulled segment on transgender athletes and laying out beliefs that sports and fans would be better off without discussions of race and activism.

Goldberg answered questions concerning an end-of-year round table and displayed frustration as the show’s lone conservative correspondent, which probably planted the seeds for a departure since he’s seen disengaged during various conversations, including the lighter moments.

“Earlier this year, Bernie made the decision to leave Real Sports. Over the course of two decades, his investigative reporting produced some of the most impactful stories in the show’s history. We thank him for his contributions and wish him all the best,” HBO said in a statement.
