CNN has parted ways with senior political commentator Rick Santorum after his
comments regarding Native Americans and the impact the indigenous people’s culture
had on the U.S., The Hill reports.
“We birthed a nation from nothing. I mean, there was nothing here,” Santorum said at a
Young America’s Foundation event. “I mean, yes, we have Native Americans, but
candidly, there isn’t much Native American culture in American culture.”
Since those comments, many have called for the network to cut ties with Santorum, and
over the weekend, CNN quietly ended the commentator’s contract. A CNN executive
spoke to the Huffington Post and discussed Santorum’s departure.
“Leadership wasn’t particularly satisfied with that appearance. None of the anchors
wanted to book him,” the CNN executive said. “So he was essentially benched anyway.
I think after that appearance, it was pretty clear we couldn’t use him again.”
Following the comments, Santorum stated to CNN host Chris Cuomo that his remarks
were taken “out of context” and that he “misspoke.”
