Axios CEO Jim VandeHei appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” where one of the talking points was the Republican Party and whether it will return to what it used to be before former President Donald Trump.
VandeHei believes that those within the party who are hopeful that it returns to what it was before 2016 need to give that up.
“I had this conversation with three different people yesterday, who just pined the days of the Republican Party of old. And my point to them was: It’s gone!” VandeHei said.
The GOP is witnessing divisions rise inside the party regarding Trump’s tenure, the 2020 election, and the Jan. 6 Capitol riots. In addition, various politicians have felt the wrath of Trump for speaking out against the former president.
Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) lost her House leadership position after vocalizing her displeasure of the former president concerning the Capitol riots and repeated false allegations.
Sen. Mitt Romey (R-Utah) and Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) are other politicians within the GOP who have also expressed their disapproval against Trump but caught his wrath as a result.
“Everyone assumed Jan. 6 was this watershed moment. Historically insane, what happened. And yet almost instantly, at a moment where you would think it’s unthinkable, everyone snaps back like that — not just to the norm, but to the Trump norm,” VandeHei said.
