Cox Media Group Target of Ransomware Attacks

Dozens of Cox Media Group radio and television stations may have been the target of ransomware attacks, according to cybersecurity blog Threatpost.

The attack targeted live streams for the company’s radio and television stations. Cox Media owns 54 radio stations in 10 markets, 33 television stations in 20 markets along with multi-platform video streams and digital platforms.

Inside Radio reports that the attack began on Thursday morning. The attack on ABC affiliate WFTV in Orlando, Florida, and NBC affiliate WPXI in Pittsburgh was so crippling that workers were reportedly told to stay home.

Last week, KLAX-TV (Alexandria, Louisiana), WSB-TV (Atlanta), WFXT (Boston), WHIO-TV (Dayton, Ohio), WSOC-TV (Charlotte), WFTV (Orlando), and KOKI-TV (Tulsa), showed partial replays of old newscasts because of outages.

Threatpost found streaming was down for various Cox radio stations.
