Obama Blames Right-Wing Media for GOP Upholding Trump’s Lies

Former President Barack Obama sat down with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, where the two discussed various topics, including the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, The Wrap reports.

During the interview, Obama outlined why there is cause for concern after watching Republican leadership gather behind former President Donald Trump and the lie that the 2020 election was stolen. The former president stated that right-wing media deserves some of the blame.

“Now, the reason for that is because the base believed it and the base believed it because this had been told to them not just by the president, but by the media that they watch and nobody stood up and said, ‘Stop. This is enough. This is not true,” Obama said.

Obama went into further detail regarding the media and discussed the problems he sees in media coverage of political issues.

“Certain right-wing venues,” Obama said. “Monetize and capitalize on stoking the fear and resentment of a white population that is witnessing a changing America and seeing demographic changes and do everything they can to give people a sense that their way of life is threatened and that people are trying to take advantage of them.”

“You know, you used to have a bunch of local newspapers, local TV stations. People weren’t having these highly ideological debates, but they were kinda more focused on what’s happening day to day.”
