Murdered Victim’s Sister Speaks Out Against California Penal System

The sister of a murdered man spoke to KFI Radio hosts John and Ken Wednesday about the broken California penal system and how politics play a role in allowing killers to be set free.

Vikki Van Duyne told John and Ken that she is frustrated that her brother’s killer, David Weidert, was granted parole after 11 hearings.

The case involved a mentally disabled man named Michael Morganti, who served as a lookout while Weidart and another man stole hundreds of dollars from a Fresno doctor’s office.

Van Duyne said Weidert and the other man strangled and beat her brother for an hour and ended up burying him alive. The autopsy report indicates that Morganti suffocated to death.

“He was kidnapped, and they beat him up while he was on the way up to this area,” Van Duyne said. “He was stabbed; finally, they couldn’t get him to die, so they tied a wire around his neck. I need you guys to understand how intimate this crime was.”

Newsom took no action on the state parole board’s decision to grant Weidert parole last week.

“There is a problem with the system; it’s not just Newsom; it’s Newsom and the system,” she said. “I am trying to get Republicans and Democrats to legislate the system based on that.”

The California governor is the subject of a recall election that will take place on September 14.
