Lollapalooza Wasn’t a Super-Spreader Event, Claims Doctor

A Chicago doctor told WGN Radio host Anna Davlantes Thursday that last week’s Lollapalooza concert was not a super-spreader event.

Dr. Jeffrey Kopin is the chief medical officer for Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital.

“I think we can assume that there probably are more infections that haven’t been detected, asymptomatic people, and folks that haven’t been reported appropriately yet,” Kopin said. “I think the one thing we can say with confidence, 14 days out, is that Lollapalooza was not a super-spreader event.”

Kopin said that the city is using a public health network along with other health departments around the country to try and identify potential cases from Lollapalooza.

“There are probably more infections but it’s not a gigantic number, and that’s really great,” he said.

Chicago health officials said of the 385,000 people that attended the event, more than 90% of them were fully vaccinated.

“I think the precautions that Lollapalooza took, making sure that people were either vaccinated or had a negative COVID test, seems that it worked.”
