Major League Baseball is headed back to the cornfield! Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago reported on Monday that there will be a Field of Dreams Game in 2022. It will feature an NL Central matchup between the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds.
That matchup probably isn’t a surprise. With Chicago being the closest Major League Baseball market to Dyersville, Iowa, it makes sense that the first two games at the Field of Dreams would feature the White Sox and Cubs respectively. It also helps that Cubs manager David Ross spoiled the surprise last week.
Thursday night’s inaugural Field of Dreams Game was a ratings smash for FOX. With just under 5.9 million viewers, the White Sox walk-off win over the New York Yankees was the highest rated regular season game in 16 years.
Commissioner Rob Manfred said immediately after the game that Major League Baseball would be returning to Iowa. He did not indicate if there is a contract in place for any specific amount of time.
