Rachel Maddow will remain with MSNBC as a recent report revealed that the anchor is extending her contract with the network. However, there are some changes to Maddow’s schedule once her new deal kicks in some time next year.
According to CNN, Maddow will transition from hosting her nightly primetime program to a once-per-week show. Part of her new contract with MSNBC allows for the anchor to venture into projects with NBC Universal.
The decision to step aside from the weekly grind that comes with hosting a primetime news show shouldn’t come as a surprise, as Maddow hinted about scaling back her workload in a 2019 interview with The New York Times.
“I’m realizing now — 10, 11 years into this — that it’s fine to work long days. But it’s not good for you to work incessant long days, five days a week, 50 weeks a year for ten years,” Maddow said.
There are no set projects that Maddow plans to tackle at the moment. Nonetheless, Benjamin Mullin of The Wall Street Journal wrote that the new deal gives “her the freedom to pursue a range of formats including film and TV series, according to a person familiar with the matter. Ms. Maddow is starting her own production company that will bring its potential projects to NBCUniversal first.”
