Alex Sherman of CNBC reports that Amazon has emerged as the frontrunner to land the NFL’s Sunday Ticket package. The premium package hits the open market at the end of the 2022 season, after 27 years as a DirecTV product.
The league is seeking between $2 billion and $2.5 billion per year for Sunday Ticket according to Sherman. The goal is to have a deal done by February.
Earlier this year, Amazon was announced as the new exclusive home for the NFL’s Thursday night TV package. It cost the company $1 billion per year to secure those rights beginning next season.
Roger Goodell told NBC that the league wants to package Sunday Ticket with its other media properties including NFL Network and the NFL Red Zone channel.
While Amazon may be the perceived leader in the clubhouse, there will be competition to land Sunday Ticket. Both ESPN and Apple have expressed interest in the product. Sherman reports that NBC and Peacock are not expected to be a player in the bidding process.
