Monica Lewinsky appeared on The Daily Show Wednesday, where she discussed various topics with host Trevor Noah, one of them being cancel culture.
Lewinsky is an executive producer for the documentary “15 Minutes of Shame,” referring to herself as “patient zero” for public shaming. During her conversation with Noah, she discussed her struggles with moving past her scandal while addressing cancel culture and its wide-reaching effects.
“Are there people in power who should face consequences? Absolutely,” Lewinsky said. “But are there people who are not in positions of power who are facing the same consequence and its ruin their lives in a way that is very different? Yes to that too.”
“15 Minutes of Shame” explores various real-life accounts of non-celebrities who have been canceled or publicly shamed by multiple means. The documentary also studies the history of shaming, which dates back several centuries.
Lewinsky says that in today’s world, public shaming and cancel culture is “very much about power.” Furthermore, she states that cancel culture and the phrase itself “has become a little too broad” for her taste.
