After 16 years, the NHL returns to ESPN on Tuesday night. The network has already detailed many of its plans, including a broadcast strategy built largely on giving fans access to places they typically have not had.
ESPN is also joining the NHL in an attempt to expand the appeal of hockey. The league and network are partnering on ideas to grow the sport in Latin America and with the Latino fanbase in the US. Tuesday night, ESPN and the NHL seem to have an idea for bringing in a few new, younger fans as well.
In an appearance on Good Morning America on Monday, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman revealed that Justin Bieber will be a part of the ESPN broadcast on Tuesday night. The “Stay” singer is a devoted fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, but this week, he will be welcoming fans to Tampa, where the Lightning will unveil another Stanley Cup Champions banner before taking on the Pittsburgh Penguins.
“He’s going to be introing our game,” Bettman told ABC’s TJ Holmes. Tune in tomorrow night and you’ll see it. He is a huge fan and we’re excited to have him as part of the NHL family.”
