Popular Oakland Athletics broadcaster and former catcher Ray Fosse died on Wednesday after a 16 year battle with cancer. The news comes just two months after Fosse announced he would step away from the A’s TV booth to focus on his health and receive treatment.
Fosse enjoyed great success during his 12 years on the field. He won the World Series and a Gold Glove as a catcher. He was also a two-time All-Star. He joined the Oakland broadcast team in 1986.
Both the team and NBC Sports Bay Area issued statements.
While the Major League Baseball world paid its respects, broadcasters around the game and in the Bay Area also shared memories and tributes to Ray Fosse online.
To many baseball fans outside of Oakland and San Francisco, Ray Fosse will best be remembered as the catcher that Pete Rose ran over during the 1970 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. To Bay Area folks and A’s fans nationwide, Fosse’s personality, humor and love for the Athletics will never be forgotten.
Ray is survived by his wife Carol and their two daughters.
