When the Radio Hall of Fame announced its induction class of 2021, the name that jumped out to many in the sports format was undoubtedly Dan Patrick. He is a sports radio icon and an inspiration for many broadcasters in their 30s and 40s.
The induction ceremony was held Thursday night in Chicago. Joining Patrick in recognition was Brother Wease, Elliot Segal, Kim Komando, Javier Romero, Preston & Steve, Erica Farber and Bill Siermering.
Colleagues and partners from around the industry posted tributes to Dan Patrick. Andrew Perloff, better known to Dan Patrick Show listeners as “McLovin'”, tweeted that even actor Will Ferrell took time out to celebrate the sportscaster.
Dan Patrick started in radio before making the move to television, and he started in rock formats before making the full-time move to sports. The Dan Patrick Show began on ESPN Radio in September of 1999. Long before there were the Dannettes, Patrick was joined on air by the likes of Rob Dibble and Sean Salisbury.
He left ESPN in August of 2007. Two months later, a new version of The Dan Patrick Show launched as a simulcast, with radio distribution handled by Premier Radio Networks and a television broadcast produced by DirecTV. The model became a standard for popular sports radio shows broadcast both locally and nationwide.
In 2017, Patrick made an investment in the future of broadcasting when he helped launch the Dan Patrick School of Sportscasting at Full Sail University in Orlando, FL.
Congratulations to Dan and all of this year’s inductees to the Radio Hall of Fame.
