Stephen A. Smith: Michael Irvin Has Contaminated the Cowboys

It’s never a bad day for Stephen A. Smith when the Dallas Cowboys lose. The First Take star has milked the futility of America’s Team for all he could in the past, but this season, things have mostly been pretty good in Big D. That wasn’t the case on Sunday though and on Monday morning, Stephen A. let his First Take partner have it.

Smith said that the loss to the Broncos was squarely on Michael Irvin’s shoulders. He said the former Dallas receiver and current favorite opponent of Stephen A. Smith had “contaminated” the Cowboys. He pointed in particular to cornerback Treyvon Diggs, who is having the best season of his career.

“You got this dude addicted to making plays cuz obviously he likes hearing his name,” Smith said of Irvin hyping Diggs’s achievements. “He likes people giving him that kind of shine. You want that right? Well, opponents are relying on that lack of discipline in favor of trying to be a hero. They lure the Dallas Cowboys in and they turn them into a bunch of fragmented individuals.”

Michael Irvin won three Super Bowls in Dallas. Smith says that is a legacy the Cowboys franchise and their fans should celebrate, but it is hype that is carried in to every discussion of the current team.

“What has happened is the Dallas Cowboys, the modern day Dallas Cowboys, who ain’t won a damn thing, feeling themselves, won six straight, acting like they Super Bowl champions. What do they do? They go out there and they wet the bed.”

The Denver Broncos jumped on the Cowboys early. Despite a made rush late by Dallas, there was no way they could overcome the hole they had dug for themselves earlier in the game. That is what ultimately resulted in a 30-16 Denver win.

Irvin defended Diggs saying that he doesn’t show a lack of discipline. Instead, he takes calculated risks to compensate for shortcomings elsewhere on the defense.

Stephen A. Smith wasn’t having it.

“That’s why Michael Irvin is worried. That’s why he’s got those eyebrows raised, because he knows! He knows! He knows! They don’t have the discipline to sustain stuff week to week that’s gonna get you a Super Bowl.”
