Mayonaise is one of humanity’s most polarizing food creations. Some people like the taste. Others cringe at the mere thought of the white, sandwich-enhancing gloop. Mike Golic Jr. proved he is closer to the former group than the latter while serving as the analyst for ESPN’s coverage of the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte last week.
GoJo put mayonaise on a variety of foodstuffs while in the booth and ate each of them on camera during South Carolina’s 38-21 victory over North Carolina. It was a stunt that drew some harsh reactions. On Monday’s episode of ESPN’s new digital show Debatable, he was asked about the most absurd criticisms.
Pablo Torre said that Mike Golic Jr “became an international villain,” while Domonique Foxworth remarked that he “got Dionne Warwick on that ass.”
Junior said that the Australian media seems to be the angriest at him. A story on the Australian FOX Sports site about the game was headlined “Commentator’s ‘disgusting’ on-air act proves US is beyond saving”.
“Let that sink in after the last three years,” Mike Golic Jr said of the criticism.
Soul legend and Psychic Friends Network spokeswoman Dionne Warwick also weighed in via Twitter. Golic noted that she was considerably less harsh.
“She went ‘paid leave’,” Golic pointed out. “And Miss Warwick, while I’m still not sorry for what I did, thank you for your mercy.”
Mike Golic Sr. was no stranger to eating challenges during his days on ESPN Radio. It seems that his son has kicked things up a notch.
Give Golic Jr. credit though. He is willing to take the criticism and stand by his stunt. He told Torre and Foxworth that he would do it again and that aside from the donut, none of the foods he covered in mayonnaise were particularly bad.
