Bill Maher: “People Have to Learn How to Disagree in This Country”

Late-night talk show host Bill Maher spoke out on Friday regarding the Whoopi Goldberg suspension from “The View.”

Goldberg earned a suspension from the show for saying the Holocaust was not about race. HBO’s “Real Time” host ripped into critics who said Goldberg’s suspension was about “karma.”

“People have to learn how to disagree in this country and not hate it,” Maher said to a rousing ovation from his live studio audience.

Maher pointed out that Goldberg has been wrong in the past about many things but said that she shouldn’t have to “conform or apologize about her views on race.”

“She certainly shouldn’t have to sit out like a child and think about what she did,” he added. “The View suspending someone for sharing a view is like firing Pat Sajak for selling a vowel.”

Maher added that we must get past this point in our time where an “endless, unforgiving, mindset” dominates our culture.

“The right response to speech you don’t like is more speech,” he said. “Not the lazy, cowardly response of canceling people.”
