The next film under ESPN’s 30 for 30 banner will be Shark. The documentary is about the effect the 1996 Masters had on the rest of Greg Norman’s professional golf career and is directed by Jason Hehir, the same man at the helm of The Last Dance.
ESPN announced on Wednesday that Shark will debut on April 5 at 8 pm. Immediately after airing on the cable network, it will be available on ESPN+.
In 1996, Norman gave up a six-shot lead at The Masters. It is remembered as one of the great collapses in the event’s history. He will relive the day and revisit the course in Shark. The story, according to a press release, “isn’t quite as simple as you might think.”
“Greg Norman is by any objective measure one of the greatest golfers to ever play the game,” Hehir said. “Two-time major winner, 331 weeks at world #1, leading money winner in PGA history pre-Tiger, one of the few indelible players of his era. But despite all his success, he’s perhaps remembered most for his failure at the Masters, particularly his excruciating collapse on final Sunday in 1996. I was excited for the opportunity to tell the story of one man’s career through the prism of such a sacred site, and to examine the power of one place to mold a man’s legacy, for better or worse.”
ESPN isn’t new at the media game. The network knows how to create a little extra hype and draw a little extra attention. The April 5 premiere is just two days ahead of the start of the 2022 Masters. ESPN will air the first two days of the tournament.
