Here’s a fun fact you may not have known about Chicago White Sox radio play-by-play broadcaster Len Kasper: He has an indie rock band!
Sonic45 was launched in 2020 and the band released its debut EP, Space and Time, last year and just released a new video for their single, “Different Man.”
Kasper isn’t the only Chicago sports media personality in the band either. Matt Spiegel, co-host of 670 The Score’s Parkins and Spiegel, is Sonic45’s lead singer with Dag Juhlin from The Steve Dahl Podcast on guitar. Liam Davis is also on guitar, while Gerald Dowd is on drums. Kasper plays bass, writes all of the band’s songs, and founded the entire project.
Give a listen to “Different Man,” which you might find it a pleasant surprise — especially if power pop is your kind of sound.
According to Robert Feder, Kasper describes Space and Time as following “the passage of time from youth to middle age in a way that aims, at times, to acknowledge the fleeting nature of our time on Earth and the constant struggle of balancing self-awareness with letting yourself go in the moment.”
“Life is nuanced and my goal in writing these songs was to reflect that in as palpable a way as possible,” said Kasper.
Whether or not Sonic45 accomplishes those objectives probably requires a close listen to the lyrics. But even without that, their songs are very catchy and should get your foot tapping along.
You can find all of the band’s music for streaming or download on Bandcamp. And if you want just a bit more, here’s the video for another song off Space and Time, titled “Pills.”
