The leading advocate for broadcasters in the United States has released a statement opposing Russian-sponsored programming. Last week, Russia launched a full-scale attack against Ukraine.
In a release, The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) reiterated that they are a “fierce defender of the First Amendment” and the role it plays in society.
“It does not prevent private actors from exercising sound, moral judgment,” said CEO Curtis LeGeyt. “To that end, given the unprovoked aggression exhibited by Russia against the free and sovereign people of Ukraine, NAB calls on broadcasters to cease carrying any state-sponsored programming with ties to the Russian government or its agents.”
Russian-state media channels like RT have been barred from making money on ads on platforms like YouTube. On Wednesday, DirecTV announced it was cutting ties with the network.
“Given the unprovoked aggression exhibited by Russia against the free and sovereign people of Ukraine, NAB calls on broadcasters to cease carrying any state-sponsored programming with ties to the Russian government or its agents,” added LeGeyt.
NAB called for the nation to unite and stand against misinformation for “freedom and democracy across the globe.”
