Sports radio listeners in the nation’s capital were treated to a breakdown of broadcasters’ salaries on Tuesday’s edition of Grant & Danny on 106.7 The Fan. Grant Paulsen asked others in the room to guess the value of some new contracts handed out by ESPN. When he revealed that Adam Schefter will make $45 million over the lifespan of his new contract, his partner felt the need to speak up.
“It’s good that people appreciate talent and work in sports media, so I like that,” Danny Rouhier said. “But, it seems like a lot. It seems like a lot for a guy that I think used to be a news breaker and now just gets the word out for people that want the word out.”
Adam Schefter has come under fire multiple times since the 2021 NFL season began for the way he presents information. Most recently, he was accused of being a mouthpiece for DeShaun Watson’s legal team.
Grant & Danny keyed in on an earlier controversy. The duo has covered the Washington Commanders extensively and keyed in on Schefter’s relationship with the franchise and the people in the middle of these incidents.
Paulsen kept repeating the phrase “Mr. Editor” while doing an impression of Schefter. It is a reference to a story that came out in October. Schefter used the phrase to address former Washington Team President Bruce Allen in an email asking Allen to approve the way Schefter had written a story.
In fairness to Adam Schefter, public scrutiny clearly has not had an effect on the way he is valued by ESPN or any other media outlet. The average annual salary in his new contract should be all the proof anyone needs that Schefter is still considered an asset, not only by ESPN, but by all of the other networks and digital outlets that tried to woo him before he re-signed in Bristol.
