Gloria Borger: Some Republicans Didn’t Show Ketanji Brown Jackson Respect

CNN Chief Political Analyst Gloria Borger assessed the historical appointment of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court Thursday, noting that many Republicans couldn’t wait to leave the floor following the Senate’s 53-47 vote.

Jackson became America’s first Black woman to be appointed to the Supreme Court. Borger called out Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), who was reportedly late for the proceedings.

“I think it was rude that Rand Paul was late, maybe he had a late flight, so we’ll give him that excuse,” said Borger. “Lindsey Graham wasn’t wearing the right tie, so he had to vote from outside the chamber.”

Borger said the process to appoint a Justice has been heavily politicized over the past 16 years. “Looking back to 2005, Justice Roberts, who no one would consider a liberal by any means, got 22 Democrats to vote for him.”

Borger argued that some Republicans didn’t show Judge Jackson the respect that she was owed.

“Let me point out that she (Jackson) is very popular,” said Borger. “This is not somebody with a twenty percent rating. People saw how graceful she was under pressure, and they decided they liked her.”

“I think the public was against those people who decided they couldn’t stay in that chamber,” she added. “This may boomerang for them. But at the very least, even if you disagree with the result, you can honor her achievement, and they couldn’t stay to do that.”
