This week, the main topic dominating news outlets has been the leaked draft opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade, a move that would end the nationwide right to legal abortion.
“Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver went after the Supreme Court citing data displaying that 25 percent of women have had an abortion, with 6 in 10 of those already mothers.
“Some who get abortions are survivors or rape or incest, others might need one for medical reasons, but also just to be clear, some will be seeking abortion because they f–king want one, and this is very much about them too,” Oliver said. “This is a fight for people’s right to have control over their bodies. It’s about bodily autonomy.”
Furthermore, Oliver claimed that while conservatives have been working to overturn the issue for decades, the late-night host stated that Democrat leaders have not been bold in standing up for abortion rights.
Oliver used former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, adding that the latter ran on a platform of his support of the Freedom of Choice Act. Still, upon taking office, Obama distanced himself from it.
As a result, Oliver is calling for elected officials to “stop tiptoeing around the issue of abortion and take steps to properly safeguard it.”
“The dream version of this would be a constitutional amendment that would support people’s fundamental rights to make personal decisions about contraception, pregnancy, marriage, and family life. But until then, we’re going to need other legislation at the state and federal level.”
