Chris Sommer Leaving Broadcast Industry After Four Decades

Longtime KRLD news anchor Chris Sommer announced Monday that he is leaving the broadcast industry after four decades behind the microphone.

According to Radio Insight, Sommer has spent the last three decades in the Dallas market. He was hired as a newscaster at News/Talk 570 KLIF in the 1990s. In 1992, he was hired to be part of the morning show at Country 99.5 The Wolf KPLX. He joined KRLD in 2012.

“I am departing to take on a completely new challenge in a totally different field,” Sommer said in a Facebook post. “It’s out of my comfort zone, but I think I’m gonna love it, and as I mentioned on Saturday, I am extremely excited for the next chapter.”

According to NewsRadio 1080 KRLD’s website, Sommer, and his counterparts at 99.5 The Wolf won two NAB Marconi Awards, numerous national station-of-the-year honors, and helped build America’s largest country radio station.

“I am leaving KRLD/TSN effective Friday, June 17,” Sommer added. “But I also have made the decision to leave the broadcasting industry, which has been so good to me for nearly 40 years. It’s the only real job I’ve had since I was a teenager, and it’s been a wonderful ride.”
