The former senior adviser to Donald Trump and founding member of the board of Breitbart News, Steve Bannon, was convicted on two counts of contempt of Congress.
A jury returned the verdict on Friday that will see Bannon face a minimum of 30 days and a maximum of two years in prison. Last November, the former Trump aide was charged with two counts of contempt of Congress.
Bannon had refused to comply with a subpoena issued by the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack at the U.S. Capitol. According to CNN, federal prosecutor Molly Gaston slammed Bannon’s actions in the closing remarks.
“His belief that he had an excuse not to comply does not matter, that is not a defense to contempt,” Gaston said.
Furthermore, Evan Corcoran, Bannon’s attorney, tried to condemn the trial on politics but was met with constant objections from the prosecution.
“We come to our political views honestly … no one should … face a criminal prosecution … based on politics,” he said.
Bannon now hosts “Bannon’s War Room” since his exit from the Trump administration and positions from Breitbart News.
