After missing most of the Major League Baseball season to date after an April cancer diagnosis, Toronto Blue Jays broadcaster Buck Martinez made his return to the broadcast booth Tuesday.
Fans offered Martinez a warm welcome back to the ballpark, giving him a standing ovation as he thanked them for their love and support during his battle.
“I hope that my journey has helped some of you out there that are dealing with some issues of your own because you inspired me to get through this,” Martinez said. “And hopefully watching me get through it will help you fight the good fight as well.”
The 73-year-old is synonymous with the Blue Jays. He spent six of his 17 seasons in the Major Leagues with the club, managed the organization for a year and a half, and has worked on Sportsnet broadcasts since 2010.
