Joel Klatt had to assume play-by-play duties in the second half of FOX’s Nebraska/Oklahoma game when Gus Johnson became ill. On Monday, he recalled some of the things he was thinking about when it became clear he was going to drive the bus.
Joining The Next Round, Klatt said that he had zero experience doing play-by-play entering the second half of the game.
“I’ve never done play-by-play in my life,” Klatt admitted. “Maybe in my head. But that was interesting.”
Klatt also said that because Big Noon Kickoff was at the stadium as well, it worked out for them in terms of helping in the booth.
“We were, I guess, fortunate because of the style of the game and obviously Brady (Quinn) and the guys are there. Coach Meyer is there. In a weird way, in the fourth quarter, it was almost better to have a big, over-arching conversation about those programs and where they are at.”
Klatt didn’t want to finish his thought about the day without reassuring everyone that Gus Johnson was healthy and ready for the next FOX game.
“Gus is doing great. It just happens. We’re human. He’s going to be fine. He’s going to be raring to go this week when we are up in Michigan.
Let’s just say I didn’t wake up thinking to myself, ‘hey, I’m going to call the second half.'”
