New York Islanders television announcer Brendan Burke has been rumored as a potential replacement for New York Yankees announcer John Sterling when the 84-year-old some day decides to hang up his headset. Burke, however, might not be in play for the gig due to his own volition.
In a feature story with Neil Best of Newsday, Burke was asked if had to someday choose between being a baseball announcer or a hockey announcer. He gave a somewhat surprising answer.
“I think at this point, I would consider myself a hockey guy.”
The 38-year-old has seen his hockey profile grow, with national assignments from TNT added to his schedule. Burke worked 12 games on the Yankees Radio Network as one of several fill-in announcers as Sterling took extra time off during the season. Burke told Barrett Sports Media’s Peter Schwartz he enjoyed his time with the Yankees on the radio.
“It’s an awesome experience,” said Burke. “It means something to me in a sentimental way…the Yankees radio job specifically. To actually sit in that chair and call Yankees games and just call baseball…it’s something that I had a passion for and I did a long time again and haven’t done in a long time so it was great to fill some of the down months in hockey with baseball.”
