Merrill Reese Says Phone Vibrated For 15 Straight Minutes After CBS Shoutout

A brief moment during Sunday’s Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers broadcast on CBS brought much joy and appreciation to Eagles radio play-by-play voice Merrill Reese.

During the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game, CBS Sports announcers Jim Nantz and Tony Romo took a moment to honor Reese, who recently turned 80, and analyst Mike Quick. Nantz called them “my favorite hometown broadcasting team.”

During an appearance on 94WIP, the Eagles flagship station, Reese was asked about the moment by morning host Angelo Cataldi.

“I did not know this happened,” Cataldi said. “I was listening to you and Mike — another great broadcast — and then I found that afterwards, on television, they did a tribute to you and Mike. Did you know about this? When did you hear about it?”

“My phone, which is on silent, started to vibrate and didn’t stop for 15 minutes,” said Reese. “Jim and Tony are great guys. That was very kind of them and I am deeply appreciative and honored, honestly. Because that was just so nice of them. They’re great guys.”

Reese also heaped praise onto Quick, who he has worked with for 25 years, saying announcing games with him is like going to the game with a friend.
