A beef has developed between ESPN New York 98.7 hosts Don La Greca and Rick DiPietro that neither side has been shy about airing this week.
“DiPietro and Rothenberg had some really nasty things to say about us earlier today,” Kay said. “Especially about Don (La Greca).”
“That’s fine. I don’t care, I’m not gonna back down,” La Greca said. “He attacked me. I know it’s all fun so I can’t have fun back?”
“Yeah, but you were mean spirited in your fun,” countered Kay.
On Tuesday, DiPietro took issue with La Greca’s characterization that the Jets and Giants have rarely been good at the same time. DiPietro said La Greca’s comments were “self-serving, uninspired, and lazy” saying he watches “more sports in a night” than La Greca watches in a week. He continued by saying he had originally not planned on appearing at The Michael Kay Show’s 20th anniversary celebration, but now he will so he can take shots at those involved.
“Because he was mean spirited about the work,” La Greca said. “Never go after me that I’m not doing the work. I got a sponsor, I gotta come up with a top 5, if you don’t like it stick your head up your butt. I don’t bow down to him. He’s always treated me very well. So we go after him and it just becomes a back and forth. Listen, I’m not gonna give you material. Go find a way to fill your three hours. We’re good.”
After Peter Rosenburg said the situation was getting worse not better, La Greca continued to defend himself.
“He texts and goes after me. Obviously, it’s in good fun. What am I supposed to say? ‘Oh, you’re funny Rick. You got me. You really got me.’ Are we big boys or are we children? Cause if we’re children, we’ll just go ‘Oh, good job! Are you ok?’ and then we’ll have our participation trophy and we’ll have it up on the wall that we both got our digs in and we can move on.
“Or we’re big boys and we throw haymakers back and forth but all of the sudden somebody’s gotta get their nose out of order. ‘You offended me. You went too far. Don really meant what he said.’ Are we big boys or are we babies? I’ll play it anyway you want. You wanna have a pillow fight or a big boy fight? Cause I’ll play it anyway you want.”
