After comedian Dave Chapelle was criticized for his Saturday Night Live monologue over the weekend about anti-Semitism, Stephen A. Smith shared he is constantly worried about being the next “victim of cancel culture”.
“We keep finding a reason to ostracize folks,” Smith said on his Know Mercy podcast. “And on a personal level — make no mistake about it — I wake up every day feeling I’m next. Ladies and gentlemen, I’m on live television 10 hours a week minimum. Live. No seven-second delay, no tape delay, no anything. The only thing that I’ve ever taped is this podcast. Everything else is live! I slip up? I’m toast! You think people don’t know that? Which is why they try to get at me in the ways that they do on social media or beyond.”
Smith then pointed to an incident in 2005 while in San Antonio covering the NBA Finals. The crowd gathered behind him chanted “Stephen A. Sucks!” during a segment on ESPN. After the segment concluded, Smith gave those assembled the middle finger. He said “it was a fireable offense” and noted he wouldn’t get the benefit of the doubt today.
