Lou Merloni Addresses Future After WEEI Departure

Lou Merloni is departing WEEI as part of a revamped lineup on the Boston sports radio station, and Monday he addressed his future and his departure on Merloni, Fauria, & Mego.

Merloni was candid about what his departure from the show and what his future holds to open the show.

“At the end of the year, my contract runs out,” Merloni said. “It will not be renewed, and I will be off this radio show. Guys, I’ve been around this business 15 years. Big O (Glenn Ordway) put me on the radio around 2008, and I’ve seen people a lot better than me moving on. To me, it’s not a shock. It’s not a surprise. I’ve seen guys better than me move on. The company is going in a different direction but it doesn’t mean that I’m actually gone in this company.

“I do have an opportunity and I’ll be able to do what I want to do, being in the booth and talking about the Red Sox. I’m looking forward to that. It’s something I’ve been hesitant about doing over the years. Basically, you get comfortable. You get comfortable in your lifestyle, money, whatever it may be. I have to move on or I’m good where I am. It’s something I’m dealing with and I’ve been thinking about for some time. And now, obviously, I’m gonna get an opportunity to pursue that.”

Merloni added he was thankful that the development played out the way it did.

“Sometimes in life, you need a push to take you where you need to be. So that’s what I plan on doing. We’ll see where it goes. Nothing is etched in stone right now but hopefully for me, I’ll be moving on. Not on this show, but continuing to do what I love, and that’s talking baseball. Professionally, I’m looking forward to it, but I’m ready. Not to say I haven’t had a fun with you two. It’s been a blast,” he said to co-hosts Christian Fauria and Meghan Ottolini.

The former Major League infielder later discussed that waking up every day and trying to find something negative to create a discussion began to wear on him, but said that’s part of what the job entails.
