College football’s bowl season is not what it once was. So many players are now absent for their postseason game, whether that is because they are in the process of transferring to another school or because they have decided to skip the game and prepare for the upcoming NFL Draft. Roddy Jones of the ACC Network says it is something that bothers everyone, including those calling the game.
Jones was a guest on 92.9 The Game’s John & Hugh Tuesday morning in Atlanta. Hugh Douglas asked Jones how he felt about the postseason and what they now mean for expectations for a team in the following season.
“It’s tough to take anything from them, to be honest with you, because you have rosters that are so depleted,” he answered. “I mean Utah played with a running back at corner last year.”
Roddy Jones said that the depleted Utah secondary was directly responsible for Ohio State receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s record-breaking performance in the Rose Bowl.
He also noted that the trend isn’t just limited to players. Even coaches have changed his expectations for how he has to prepare to call a bowl game.
“I’m doing a bowl game that neither team has an offensive coordinator. I mean, you look at the Fenway Bowl. Neither team has a head coach or quarterback.”
Roddy Jones will partner with Wes Durham and Taylor Davis to call two bowl games this season. They will work the New Orleans Bowl on December 21st and the Pinstripe Bowl on December 29. Both games are on ESPN.
