CBS Sports announcer Greg Gumbel continually called Pittsburgh Steeler Mitch Trubisky by the wrong name during a 21-play drive Sunday, frequently referring to him as Carolina Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold. The PM Team of Andrew Fillipponi and Chris Mueller on 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh wondered how no one corrected Gumbel.
“Here’s what I don’t get about that: We’re not talking about a high school game,” Mueller said. “These are crews on national television with a director in a truck. People who are paid pretty good money — I think — to get in the ear of the people actually talking to you. At no point did anyone up and down the chain of command tell Greg Gumbel ‘Hey, Sam Darnold isn’t the quarterback for the guys’. That just didn’t happen. How? How is that possible? Anybody? Am I crazy here?”
“Gumbel was the man at CBS, and NBC” Mueller later explained to the show’s 24-year-old producer. “He was their number one guy before Jim Nantz ascended to that perch. Also, I can’t believe he’s 76. He looks way younger than that.”
“It’s because of that wig,” Fillipponi countered. “He has like five different wigs. For different occasions. ‘This is fresh haircut wig, his is a week after the haircut wig, this is three weeks in. Week before the haircut wig. He has elaborate wigs.”
Mueller then said he didn’t feel sorry for Gumbel after the longtime media personality was critical of sports talk radio as an industry earlier this year.
“Hey Greg, focus on getting the names right, and get back to me,” concluded Mueller.
