Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) has faced calls to resign after revelations that he fabricated vast portions of his resume, background and personal finances. However, fellow Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) isn’t ready to shun Santos.
Additionally, Gaetz took a shot at the New York media for not properly vetting the politician, considering he was running in a major city and not a small town in the United States. Nonetheless, he did credit the local press for reporting on Santos.
“What’s crazy to me is that that happened in New York, of all places,” Gaetz told CNN’s Michael Smerconish on Saturday. “Like, this wasn’t rural Mississippi. It was the center of the media. And I think there actually were some local outlets that reported on the concerns about Santos as a candidate.”
Gaetz also stated that Santos would have to undergo an ethics process, but until that process is complete, the Florida politician intends to treat him like any other colleague.
“George Santos will have to go through the congressional ethics process. I don’t want to prejudge that process, but I think he deserves the chance to at least make his case,” Gaetz said.
“There are requirements members of Congress have to meet when it comes to the money that they donate to their own campaigns.”
