DraftKings, Barstool Hit With Big Fines By Ohio Casino Control Commission

DraftKings and Barstool Sportsbook have officially been fined in Ohio over various sports betting violations in 2022 and early 2023 according to Steve Bittenbender at Casino.org.

The Ohio Casino Control Commission fined Penn Sports Interactive, which operates Barstool Sportsbook, $250,000. DraftKings was hit with a $500,000 citation.

Barstool’s violation came back in December when Barstool Sportsbook was promoted during a live college football show at the University of Toledo. It’s illegal in Ohio to promote sports betting on college campuses.

“In this matter, we fell short of the mark,” Penn Entertainment chief compliance officer Chris Soriano told the Commission. “We accept responsibility for that by reading the advertisement during the Barstool College Football Show.”

DraftKings got dinged for mailing out sportsbook promotions to more than 2,500 Ohio residents under the age of 21, and then for violating responsible gaming standards in ad materials.

Both companies will put additional measures in place to ensure repeat violations don’t happen.
