Tom Verducci: It’s Never Been More Important To Have Current Information From Players

Tom Verducci has enjoyed getting the chance to be in the broadcast booth on occasion as an analyst for FOX’s MLB coverage for the last 14 seasons.

Verducci explained in an appearance on Bernstein & Holmes on 670 The Score in Chicago Monday that there was never any trepidation about moving from being a reporter into the analyst’s role.

“I’ve been doing games in the booth since 2009, so it’s been a long time,” he said. “But to me it’s about as much as I’ve been around the game and talked to players, coaches, managers, front office people. I feel like I’m dealing with a wealth of information that is always current.”

2023 marks Tom’s 42nd season covering Major League Baseball. Verducci mentioned that if he’s going to be in the analyst chair for a game, he puts in the proper work to prepare. That includes talking to the scheduled starters, learning as much as possible about them and their previous start. He asks questions about pitch grips as well so he can give viewers as much information as possible.

“I’m making sure that the information that I’m presenting to you as a viewer is current and is straight from sources,” he said. “And I think current is especially important, because I like to say the game to me has changed more in the last five years than it did the first 37 that I was covering baseball.

“It has changed at a rapid pace, and you better keep up with the changes or else you’re gonna be behind very quickly,” Verducci added.
